CANARIE
announces the Advanced Network Applications, Services and Technologies (ANAST) Shared-Cost
Funding Program.
Quebec City - CANARIE Inc. today announced a new, three year, $8 million dollar
shared-cost R&D program to support the development of advanced networking
applications, services and technologies. The fund will be divided equally into three
streams: SchoolNet Caching, Advanced End-to-End Applications and Advanced Network
Technology. These funds will be allocated on an ongoing basis (after the various start
dates) until all funds have been committed.
SchoolNet Caching (opens immediately - June 1999) The aim of the SchoolNet Caching stream
is to stimulate the development of pilot projects using a variety of transmission
technologies (satellite, wireless, cable, telecommunications) and caching techniques to
improve Internet access for Canadian schools.
Advanced End-to-End Applications (opens September 15, 1999)The goal of the Advanced
End-to-End Applications
stream is to stimulate new production, distribution and use of high-quality audio and
full-motion video materials and other high-performance technologies using CANARIE's CA*net
3 testbed network, with a view to scaling these systems to provide similar services to a
larger audience.
Advanced Network Technology (opens September 15, 1999) The Advanced Network Technology
stream is designed to
support transport and middleware services (such as Ipv6, Qbone, MPLS, statistics and
measurements, etc.) that are
required for next-generation Internet networks.
With the $55 million contribution CANARIE received from federal government in February
1998 for Next Generation
Networking (NGN), CANARIE and the Bell Consortium are deploying CA*net 3, the world's
first national optical R&D
Internet. As part of the NGN initiative, the ANAST program will assist businesses,
universities, research institutions and schools in developing innovative applications for
CA*net 3. It will also use networks like CA*net 3 to evaluate and test new
modalities of instruction, e-business and health delivery over a high performance network.
"CANARIE's ANAST program will address some of Canada's connectivity challenges."
said Dr. Andrew K. Bjerring,
President & CEO of CANARIE. "It will assist in creating the knowledge base
necessary for Canadian companies to
compete globally in the emerging E-Commerce and Lifelong learning sectors." he added.
CANARIE is Canada's Advanced Internet Development Organization and works in collaboration
with industry,
governments and research & education communities to leverage the enabling capacity of
the Internet to deliver the benefits of the information age to Canadians. CANARIE is a
not-for-profit industry-led corporation with over 120
fee-paying members and a 26 Member Board representing private and public sectors equally.
